Google AI Mode and Zero-Click Search: How Brands Stay Visible
More and more Google searches end without a click to any website. AI Overviews answer the question at the top of the page, and AI Mode, available in the EU since October 2025, turns search into a conversation. For brands that relied on blog traffic, that is a real change. Here is what the data actually says, and what to do about it.
What the numbers show
- Most searches already ended without an open-web click before AI answers scaled: SparkToro’s 2024 study found 59.7% of EU Google searches ended that way.
- AI Overviews cut clicks further. Pew Research (July 2025) found that people clicked an organic result in 8% of searches with an AI summary, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary only 1% of the time.
- Europe is not spared. Sistrix estimated in February 2026 that German websites lose about 265 million clicks a month to AI Overviews, and that the click-through rate of the first result drops from roughly 27% to 11% when an overview appears.
- Not every query is hit equally. Informational content (health, how-to, encyclopedic) loses most; transactional and brand searches lose least, and some studies even see brand queries gain.
Measured data on AI Mode itself is still thin, so be careful with the dramatic percentages that circulate. The direction, however, is clear.
Five things brands can do
- Split your pages by job. Pages that answer simple questions will lose clicks; accept it and stop over-investing there. Pages for buying, comparing, booking and local intent still get clicked; put the effort there.
- Build brand demand. People who search your name still click. Social media, creators, PR and email all feed branded search, which is the most AI-resistant traffic you have.
- Publish what only you know. Original data, real projects, prices, first-hand experience and named experts are what AI answers cite and what readers trust. Generic articles are what AI replaces.
- Get the basics right. Indexable pages, fast mobile load, clear structure and an up-to-date Google Business Profile. Google says no special markup is needed to appear in AI Overviews; good pages are.
- Measure differently. Track impressions, branded searches and leads, not only sessions. In Search Console, look for pages with many impressions and very low click-through to see where AI answers are taking over.
Our take
A website is not less important in this world; it is more important, because it is the source the AI reads and the place people go when they are ready to act. What changes is the job: fewer pages chasing generic traffic, more pages that prove you are the real expert and make it easy to get in touch. That is how we approach SEO and web development for clients, and why we combine search with social media and creators that build demand for the brand name itself.
